The Bonfire Celebrations in Mayfield are one of the oldest and largest in Sussex, rooted in history and still blossoming today, bringing the village out together on the streets on the third Saturday of September every year. We have three massed procession of about 1,000 marchers in full costume holding flaming torches, with marching bands and drumming groups providing the soundscape. All this is watched by 5,000 people often coming from miles away just to watch one of the “original”- and we like to think, the BEST - society celebrations!

With so many people coming to the village, safety is vital so we need security and first aid services, which all has to be paid for, in addition to the cost of the fireworks display, the 5,000 flaming torches, the road closures, security communications, the bands, sound system, portaloos and post-event clean up. In all, the event now costs in the region of £15,000 per year to stage! That is a lot of fundraising, which is becoming increasingly difficult to generate at the same time that costs have risen exponentially. Therefore, along with many other bonfire societies, we have decided to offer sponsorship opportunities to businesses and individuals, to secure the future of our event.
